Common Skincare Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Skin Without You Realizing It
A large percentage of the population assumes they know how to properly care for their skin. For most, it goes a little something like this: wash your face, apply some moisturizer, slap on some sunscreen, and maybe use a serum or two, and voila! You are now one of those super put-together people who has their skincare routine down to a science. It’s not quite that simple.
While these practices are all generally considered beneficial for your skin, there are plenty of other bad habits in your daily life that can be detrimental to your skin without you even realizing it. From the way you sleep to the foods you eat, these mistakes can cause irritation, acne, sensitivity, and even long-term damage to your skin.
This isn’t to say you aren’t putting in effort to take care of your skin. It’s just that you may not be educated enough on the subject. Skincare is not just something you do to feel good, it’s a science, a system, and it needs to be treated as such. So, without further ado, here are some of the most common skincare mistakes you could be making that are ruining your skin, and how to avoid them.
Over-Cleansing and Barrier Damage
The first and probably most common mistake people make when it comes to their skincare routine is over-washing their face. Washing your face is important for keeping your skin clean, but over-washing can do serious damage. When you wash your face too frequently, or use a cleanser that is too harsh, you can end up stripping your face of its natural oils.
When this happens, you are no longer protected by your skin’s natural barrier, which can cause sensitivity, dryness, and an increased risk of irritation. Not to mention, it will make your face feel funny. Instead of trying to “fix” your skin by washing it a ton, try easing up a bit and see what happens. I bet your skin will thank you.
Mixing Too Many Active Ingredients
This next one is especially true for all my product junkies out there. We all love a good acid, or retinol product, and when we see all the amazing results, we want to try everything at once. The thing is, overusing active ingredients can cause serious irritation and damage to your skin. While they may all have amazing benefits, acids, retinols, vitamin C, and exfoliants should be used in moderation.
When you mix too many active ingredients at once, you risk redness, irritation, and even peeling. Instead of piling on the products, try to ease up a bit. Give your skin a break, and let it rest. You will be surprised at what a huge difference it can make. There’s no need to overdo it.
Ignoring Sunscreen as a Daily Essential
This is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to a good skincare routine. Sunscreen is not just for the beach, people! Whether you are inside all day, or outside in the blistering heat, if you are exposed to UV rays, you need to be wearing sunscreen. While we all know that too much sun exposure can cause sunburn and even skin cancer, it also accelerates aging and leads to hyper-pigmentation. Yikes.
While this may not be immediately damaging to your skin, it is incredibly important for long-term health. Instead of applying sunscreen only when you are in direct sunlight, try applying it daily under your makeup or as a standalone moisturizer. Your skin will look better, and you will be protected against damage.
Following Trends Without Understanding Your Skin
Trends are huge in the beauty community. They influence what products we buy, the way we apply our makeup, and even the way we care for our skin. When it comes to your skin, however, trends can be incredibly detrimental if you follow them without understanding what is going on with your skin. If you are treating your skin for a specific condition, or if you have specific skin concerns, following a trend without understanding your skin can lead to irritation, or even worsen conditions.
Instead of following the trends, try to take some time to understand what is going on with your skin. Have it analyzed, and get a better understanding of how to care for it based on your specific skin type and needs.
How Education Changes Everything
The most important difference between random acts of skincare, and professional cosmetology, is education. When you have an education on the way your skin works, you will be able to make informed decisions about how to properly care for it. You will learn how to recognize the early warning signs of damage, how to treat your skin based on its needs, and the ways in which you should be using products to achieve the best results.
At SkinCareArt, we believe education is key to good skincare. Not only will we educate you on the products you should be using, but we will give you the tools to understand why and how you should be using them. We want to empower you with an understanding of what makes your skin tick, and how you can give it the best care possible.
Final Thought
Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to be correct. By avoiding these common mistakes, and educating yourself on the best ways to care for your skin, you can start on the path to beautiful, healthy, glowing skin. Remember, good skincare is not about doing more, it’s about doing it right.
